The new virtual collection of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy on the portal DiZbi HAZU – Memorial collection of Franjo Kogoj
Franjo (Fran) Kogoj, Croatian physician (Kranjska Gora, October 13, 1894 – Kranjska Gora, September 30, 1983). Founder of scientific dermatovenereology in Croatia. After completing his medical studies in Prague (1920) and specialization in dermatovenereology, he qualified as a private assistant professor in Brno. From 1923, he worked at the Clinic for Skin and Venereal Diseases in Zagreb, where he served from 1927 to 1965 as the head; full professor at the School of Medicine in Zagreb. In addition, in 1955–1964 he was the scientific manager of the Dermatovenereological Clinic in Ljubljana and from 1967 to 1974 director of the Institute for Clinical Medical Research in Zagreb. At his instigation, the YASA Allergy Center in Hvar was founded in 1965. He was involved in the study of allergies, skin tuberculosis, keratoderma and the problem of eczema, and introduced a new concept in the treatment of syphilis. He was a regular member of Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 1947) and its vice-president (1958–1972). In 1962, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The memorial material of Franjo Kogoj is preserved in the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy, CASA, which took over the management of it from the Division for the History of Medical Sciences.
This virtual collection contains digitized museum materials: 47 Kogoj’s diplomas and charters and 46 photo portraits of world dermatologists with their dedications to Franjo Kogoj, and represents a rare example of complete testimony about the international career and network of professional contacts of a Croatian doctor.
In 2021, the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Division for the History of Medical Sciences, CASA prepared the exhibition Between memory and history: Kogoj’s collection of photographic portraits and honorary charters with a bilingual catalog (Croatian/English) in cooperation with the Department of Dermatvenereology of the School of Medicine, University in Zagreb, and in 2022 the book Salus aegroti suprema lex: the role of Franjo Kogoj in the development of dermatovenereology in Croatia was published by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Discussions and materials for the history of science, book 21, Department of Medical Sciences, volume 11). https://dizbi.hazu.hr/a/?pr=iiif.v.a&id=2482108
