Article on portraits of Croatian pharmacists from the HMMF HAZU collection published in the Glasnik HAZU

A new issue of the Glasnik HAZU (20-21) has been published, which includes an article on portraits of Croatian pharmacists from the Collection of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy.

The Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy, the first and, so far, the only science museum operating within the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, was founded in 2014. The initial core of the Museum’s holdings consisted of the Collection for the History of Medicine and Pharmacy taken over from the Division for the History of Medical Sciences. The heritage of Croatian pharmacy preserved in the collections of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy originates from the collection of the Institute for the History of Pharmacy, founded in 1951 by Hrvoje Tartalja (1907 – 1990), and integrated into the Institute for the History of Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences in 1960 (today the Division for the History of Medical Sciences of the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts). Among other things, the museum collection contains eight portraits of Croatian pharmacists painted in oil on canvas by Hinko Brodjovin (1864 – 1941), owner of the pharmacy K Zrinjskomu in Zagreb, collector and amateur painter. These portraits depict the heads of the Croatian-Slavonian Provincial Pharmaceutical Association: Josip Grahovac, Dragutin Jelinek, Anton Ernest Katkić, Žiga Ključec, Otto Löschner and Slavko Zimmermann (two portraits), including Brodjovin’s self-portrait. The collection also contains Portrait of Pharmacist Hinko Brodjovin, a work by the prominent Croatian painter Milivoj Uzelac (1897 – 1977), previously unknown to the public. We can assume that Brodjovin, as a connoisseur of fine arts and a prominent collector, commissioned his portrait from Uzelac during his stay and work in Zagreb. The portraits were restored and presented to the public at an exhibition held from 6 to 30 June 2024 at the Klovićevi dvori Gallery in Zagreb. The exhibition shaped the story about the portrayed pharmacists from the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries who played important roles in the Croatian pharmaceutical profession, society and culture, especially in the public life of Zagreb.
