The book Bibice – the story of the City through the activities of the doctors from the Bibica family was presented in Dubrovnik

We bring you news that is equally important for the Croatian history of medicine as for the history of art: in the Dubrovnik Art Gallery on Saturday, July 1 at 8:30 p.m., the official presentation of the book Bibice – the story of the City through the activities of the doctors from the Bibica family was held, with a screening of the film of the same name and an exhibition of valuable donation of works by Vlaho Bukovac to the Collection of the Dubrovnik Art Gallery.

The book Bibice – the story of the City through the actions of the doctors from the Bibica family, authored by Assoc. Prof. Ana Bakija-Konsuo, MD, PhD and MSc Ivica Vučak, MD, published by Medicinska naklada, is a story about the City and its people, a story about lives and human destinies at one time, framed in the context of the historical, social and political changes of that time. This valuable work was reviewed by Prof. Stella Fatović-Ferenčić, MD, PhD,  head of the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and deputy head of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Prof. Amir Muzur, MD, PhD from the School of Medicine, University of Rijeka.

The activity of the Bibica family in Dubrovnik is significant in looking at the history of medicine and the development of the medical profession, and the presentation of their numerous social and sports activities is a valuable contribution to creating a picture of life and circumstances in Dubrovnik at the end of the 19th and during the first half of the 20th century. It is a testimony of people who tied their vocation and their emotions to the City and thus participated in the best possible way in creating its identity, enriching its everyday life and leaving a mark on its rich past. Years of research about the doctors from the Bibica family resulted in not only a book printed in Croatian and English, but also collected historical material and portraits of Vlaho Bukovac representing members of the Bibica family, owned by the author Ana Bakija-Konsuo. The owner donated the archival materials (diplomas, certificates, documents, photographs, etc.) to the State Archives in Dubrovnik in order to preserve them as a valuable source for future research.

Ana Bakija Konsuo donated to the Collections of the Dubrovnik Art Gallery three works by Vlaho Bukovac that depict portraits of the Bibica family (Portrait of Fran Bibica, 1891, oil/canvas, 60 x 47 cm, Portrait of Marko Bibica Sr., 1907, oil/hardboard, 59.5 x 42.4 cm, Portrait of Lucija Bibica, born Drašković, 1881, oil/canvas, 42.5 x 32 cm), which were presented on the day of the promotion of the book and film Bibice – the story of the City through the activities of the doctors from the Bibica family on the first floor of the exhibition space of the Art Gallery Dubrovnik. With this extremely valuable donation, the collection of modern and contemporary art of the Dubrovnik Art Gallery has been significantly enriched, which is also a strong incentive for further research on the life and work of the great painter Vlaho Bukovac, as well as the Bibica family.
