News in the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy photo collection on the eKultura portal

THE COLLECTION OF DIGITALIZED PHOTOGRAPHS from the holdings of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy, which is available on the eKultura portal, has recently been enriched with black-and-white photographs on the subject of the housing conditions of the poor population of Zagreb around 1920. Original photographs from the collections of doctors Vladimir Ćepulić and Lujo Thaller were presented at the exhibition THE REVERSE SIDE OF ZAGREB A HUNDRED YEARS AGO (Ethnographic Museum, Zagreb, 21 March – 2 June 2024). The exhibition and catalog present a special view of Zagreb’s housing misery through the lens of social pathology, with an emphasis on tuberculosis in the first decades of the 20th century, based on a preserved collection of photographs from the legacy of the doctor Vladimir Ćepulić (1891 – 1964), one of the presidents of the Croatian Medical Association (1935 – 1945) and Lujo Thaller (1891 – 1949), the founder of Croatian medical historiography.
The exhibition catalog (with Croatian and English text) can be obtained at the temporary bookstore of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb, A. Kovačića Street 5.

Also published on the same portal are photos from the photo documentation of the PUBLIC HEALTH CLUB in Zagreb. The members of the Club were students of medicine and students of the Higher School of Nursing, and their task was to gain experience that would prepare them for future work in the countryside. Professional and material support for the work of the Club was provided by the Maksimir Municipal Health Center and the City Red Cross, and they were active in several villages around Zagreb. Vidovec, located on the southeastern slopes of Zagrebačka gora, about fifteen kilometers from Zagreb, was a village in which great activity developed due to its specific circumstances. In the Photo Collection of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy there are 119 photos taken during the public health campaign of the Public Health Club in Vidovec in 1960, which vividly depict the communal and hygienic situation in the countryside, the life of the population and the educational and research activities of the Club members.
