European Antibiotic Awareness Day. The goal of marking this day in Croatia is to warn the public about a more rational and responsible use of these drugs in order to preserve their effectiveness for future generations. Doctors warn year after year that antibiotics are drugs that act on bacteria but not viruses, and that most upper respiratory tract infections are caused by viruses, so antibiotics are not helpful. Unnecessary administration of antibiotics encourages the creation of antibiotic resistance among the “good” bacteria in the human body.
