This Day in History: 2025-02-04

World Cancer Day. Cancer is an expression for a large group of diseases that can affect practically every part of the body. It generates from one cell with a series of transformations and transitions from pre-malignant changes to malignant tumors. Metastasis, the rapid creation of abnormal cells that can spread to adjacent parts of the body and into other organs, is the major cause of death due to malignancy. The number of people with malignant diseases is steadily increasing, largely due to the increased life expectancy and the greater number of elderly people when cancer appears more frequently. The World Health Organization predicts that the number of ill people worldwide will increase from 14 million in 2012 to 24 million in 2035, while the number of deaths will increase from 8.2 million to 13 million per year. The World Cancer Day is marked every year on 4th February as a unique initiative to fight this global epidemic. The aim of this is to raise awareness and knowledge about cancer and to require governments and individuals all over the world to take more effective measures to combat cancer. From 2016 to 2018, the World Cancer Day is marked by the slogan “We can. I can.“, with a message that we can all do a lot to reduce the burden of malignant illness in society.
