Miroslav Hromadko
Miroslav Hromadko (Mostar, 21. IX. 1925. – Zagreb, 26. IV. 2022.), a prominent Zagreb physician, top expert and scientist, specialist surgeon, urologist and anesthesiologist, completed primary and secondary school in Zagreb. He graduated from the School of Medicine in Zagreb in 1952, and passed the professional exam in 1953. In his further training and work, he underwent complex education in three specialist areas: surgery, anesthesiology and urology. He passed the specialist exam in general surgery in 1959. During his specialization in surgery, he dealt with the problems of anesthesiology, which was at its beginning in Croatia at that time. He devoted his interest to issues in the field of thoracic and cardiac surgery, and for the first time in Croatia introduced controlled hypothermia in open-heart surgeries. He organized the anesthesiology service at the Clinical Hospital “Dr. Ozren Novosel” (today Merkur University Hospital), and after passing the general surgery exam, he went on a World Health Organization scholarship in anesthesiology at the University of Copenhagen. Upon his return to Zagreb, he was the founder of the Anesthesiology Section of the Croatian Medical Association and served as the vice president of the section for two terms. He passed the specialist exam in anesthesiology and resuscitation in 1962 in Zagreb. He spent several visits to the Surgical Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine in Gothenburg and Stockholm. He worked at the surgical department of the regional hospital in Vänersborg and Karlshamn. He passed the specialist exam in urology in 1968 and organized the Urology Department at the Surgical Department of the Clinical Hospital “Dr. Ozren Novosel”. In early 1971, he was appointed head of the Urology Department of the Surgical Department of the Clinical Hospital “Dr. Ozren Novosel”, later the Urology Department of the Surgical Clinic of the School of Medicine in Zagreb. Within the Urology Department, he established the Hemodialysis Station, which began operating on July 17, 1971, and for the first time in Zagreb, planned hemodialysis treatment of patients with chronic renal failure began. Within the Urology Department, a new operating room and endoscopy were built, and endoscopic surgery was introduced. In 1985, he introduced the method of percutaneous lithotripsy. In 1972, he earned the title of primarius, and in 1974, he was promoted to doctor of medical sciences in the field of urology. He was elected full professor at the School of Medicine in Zagreb in 1985. He participated in teaching at the Department of Urology and Surgery at the School of Medicine in Zagreb. In 1984, he was appointed deputy head of the Surgical Clinic of the Clinical Hospital “Dr. Ozren Novosel” in Zagreb, and was elected as its head in February 1989 and held this position until January 1, 1991. He has published numerous works in the field of surgery, urology and anesthesiology and is a co-author of four books.
He was the president of the Surgical Section of the Croatian Medical Association for two terms, later of the Croatian Surgical Society of the Croatian Medical Association, the founder of the Anesthesiology Section of the Croatian Medical Association, and was the vice-president of the Anesthesiology Section of the Croatian Medical Association. He organized anesthesiology meetings in the University Workers’ Club under the title Morbidity and Mortality Meeting from 1961 to 1963 and served as the secretary of the Urology Section. In 1982, he joined the work of the Liječnički vjesnik (Medical Journal) Council, and since 2010 he has become the secretary of the Liječnički vjesnik Council and has remained in this position for many years. He was a regular member of the Societe Internationale d’Urologie (since 1985), the European Association of Urology, a regular member of the Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences (since 1982), a member of the surgical, urological and nephrological societies of the Croatian Medical Association. He chaired sessions at several international symposia (Opatija, Dubrovnik, Badgastein, Gothenburg, Linz, Athens). On the occasion of the anniversary of the Liječnički vjesnik, he received the Diploma of the Croatian Medical Association, and also received recognition from the Slovenian and Macedonian Medical Associations for his contribution to the development of urology and surgery. For his many years of improving medical science and profession and his activity in the work of the Croatian Medical Association, he was elected an honorary member of the Croatian Medical Association in 1997. He retired in 1991, but continued to be present in medicine, participating in numerous activities of the Croatian Medical Association and the Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences. He participated in the education and upbringing of numerous generations of Zagreb surgeons and urologists and greatly contributed to the development of the Clinic for Surgery of today’s Merkur University Hospital into a top surgical institution where the most complex transplantation procedures are performed in Croatia today.
